Everywhere we turn these days someone else (including us) is talking about getting organized. Organize your home! Organize your car! Even organize your desktop icons! Sometimes the pressure to organize, or even though thought of organizing when you know it needs to be done, is overwhelming. So, what can you do when you’re overwhelmed by organizing?

Step 1: Breathe
Take a deep breath. Remember, no one (I hope) is forcing you to get organized. We all know that being organized, in whatever way works for you, can alleviate stress. However, if you’re looking around at a desk of papers and the thought of organizing it is stressing you out MORE than the papers? It’s time to take a step back.
Step 2: Make a Plan
No one says all of your organizing has to happen at once. Make a plan that works for you. Perhaps you’ll work on one room at a time over a week. Maybe you’ll work on one portion of a room at a time and you’ll take a month. Whatever works for you to keep you from being overwhelmed by organizing is what’s important. A sample plan for organizing a room might include: remove items that don’t belong, find baskets, shelves, etc to aid in storing what does belong, sort, get rid of items that can be thrown away, dust and vacuum.

Step 3: Execute
Now that you have a plan that works for you, it’s time to get started! But remember, get started in a way that works best for your personality and lifestyle. Today’s plan may be to clean off the desk of items that don’t belong there. The end. This doesn’t have to all be done at once. Take your time, take deep breaths, and organize in a way that works for you and your life.
