declutter on a budget

Many believe that to be organized you have to buy things to help you get that way. That’s not necessarily true and it’s certainly not the most budget-friendly way to go.

To organize on a budget, the first place to start is with what you already have.  Check out our tips below for getting organized in a frugal way.

Declutter

It always starts with this, right? Clean out the clutter! However, it IS the easiest way to get organized. If you can clean out the junk you don’t need you’ll find boxes, baskets, bins, and SHELVES and DRAWERS are now empty! That means you’ve gained space and you didn’t have to buy anything to do it.

Gather & Organize

Gather all those now empty baskets and bins and put them in one spot. Then, start with the empty, or almost empty drawers you may now have. What items currently cluttering countertops or corners, can go there?  Remember to put like with like. This may mean taking a trip around the house to find all the coasters that can now be neatly stored in particular spot.

Once you’ve used the drawer space, look to the empty shelves and other great spots for baskets: end tables, UNDER end tables, on the bottom of coffee tables too. Baskets make everything look more organized. Even if what the basket holds is a big variety of post it note stacks and markers. It looks WAY more organized in a basket.

Hang What You Can

Chances are you have extra wall space in your closet to hang things. Depending on what you have access to, you can use anything from adhesive wall hooks to those little round ones you just screw into the drywall (but remember, when you remove these, there will be holes!). If you don’t have those, check your “Buy Nothing” facebook group for someone giving away what you’re looking for. This could be something that provides a variety of hooks, over the door hangers, or even a coat rack. A coat rack in your closet or guest room can hold purses, scarves, belts, hats, and of course, coats!

Start with these steps. Then, think about what you’d like to have when you don’t have to organize on a budget. When you’re ready, contact us! (970) 234-0039.
