Fall Home Decluttering Tips

Fall means back-to-school season, PSLs and high school football. Ah, the smells of popcorn and cotton candy… Fall can also mean declutter time! Summer vacations are over and it’s time to look through all those seasonal items and decide what stays and what goes.  For our 2019 Fall home decluttering tips, let’s start outside.

Outside: If you’re like me, each spring and summer brings lots of gardening. Garden = plastic pots from the store, bags of soil, and seed packets. Get all of this stuff out of the garden shed or backyard corner and into a trash bin! Get rid of broken pots and old tomato cages. Did your hoe break this season? Toss it. Do not keep it in the basement “just in case.” You can also start to declutter the garden. Once the sunflowers begin to fade and the finches have eaten their fill of seeds, you can start cutting those stalks down.  Some bushes and such can be pruned this time of year too, but be sure to read up on them before you start hacking away.

Did a pool float bite the dust this season? Is it still on the deck? Toss it! Get that stuff out!

In the camper: You’ll probably still take some trips this fall, especially if you’re retired or don’t have kids in school. Still, now is as good a time as any to pull everything out of cabinets and storage compartments. If there are items you haven’t used this camping season, consider leaving them out of the camper to make room for other items. Obviously, keep your repair kit! We hope you never have to use it, but keep it around anyway.  Shop the school supply aisles for great storage options that are stackable, like these we found today.

In the house: The change in seasons is a great time to go through your closet.  Get rid of items you didn’t wear all summer long.  Are there sandals that just didn’t work this year or that you decided you no longer wanted to wear? Take all that stuff to Goodwill or a consignment store. Re-organize your drawers; use the KonMari method if that works for you.

You can follow this same pattern with all the rooms in your house. Put everything back where it belongs; get the homework station ready for this year. Clean out the freezer and make a new freezer inventory list. Clean out the fridge and re-organize that too! Get a fresh start before all the holidays and family roll in in a few months. Take these fall home decluttering tips and get inspired!
